Airport Outfits That Look Good Before, During, and After the Flight

Airport outfits don’t have to begin and end with leggings. These 20 looks make a case for good knitwear, relaxed tailoring, easy layers, and shoes you’ll actually want to walk in.

I always find airport outfits a little funny. We spend weeks planning what to wear on a trip, sometimes buying an entirely new wardrobe for the destination, and then give the outfit we’ll wear to get there about thirty seconds of thought. Or we go in the opposite direction and spend so much time trying to look effortlessly chic that we forget we’ll be sitting in the same clothes for hours.

Personally, I think the airport is one of those places where you really notice the difference between an outfit that looks good and one that actually feels good to wear. You’re carrying a bag, looking for your gate, trying to get through security without holding up the entire line, and inevitably getting too warm in one place and too cold in another. The last thing you need is a waistband you can’t wait to undo or shoes you regret putting on before you’ve even boarded.

But I don’t think that means surrendering to the oldest sweatshirt in your wardrobe, either. Getting dressed for a trip can be fun. And when you find an outfit that feels like you, even an early-morning flight feels a little less miserable.

Airport Outfits

1. Matching Knit Set + White Sneakers

A matching set is the airport equivalent of having your life together when you’re absolutely running on four hours of sleep. I’m partial to chocolate brown or heather grey with crisp white sneakers and a big tote. Cute, comfortable, and no wardrobe negotiations at 5 a.m.

2. Black Leggings + Oversized Sweatshirt + Running Sneakers

The classic airport uniform isn’t going anywhere, and honestly, why should it? Black leggings, a roomy sweatshirt, and your favorite running shoes are hard to beat for a long-haul flight. Just please wear the sweatshirt you love, not the one you’ve been meaning to throw away for six months.

3. Wide-Leg Trousers + Fitted Tee + Cardigan

For anyone who finds leggings a little too casual, wide-leg trousers are an excellent alternative. A fitted white tee stops the outfit from looking oversized from head to toe, while a cardigan comes in handy when the cabin temperature drops to Arctic levels. I’d choose a pair with a forgiving waistband. Your stomach deserves a comfortable flight, too.

4. Matching Sweat Set + Long Wool Coat

This is how you make a sweatshirt look like a deliberate fashion choice. A grey or cream sweat set under a long wool coat has that off-duty model appeal without requiring uncomfortable shoes or a complicated outfit. Add sneakers and oversized sunglasses if you like the look, even if you’re only heading to the gate for a six-hour flight.

5. Straight-Leg Jeans + Striped Sweater + Sneakers

Jeans at the airport? Controversial, apparently. But a soft, relaxed straight-leg pair can be surprisingly comfortable, especially with a striped sweater and classic sneakers. I’d skip stiff denim and anything that digs into your waist when you sit. There’s looking chic, and then there’s spending an entire flight silently regretting your outfit.

6. Black Trousers + White Tee + Trench Coat

Some airport outfits are meant to take you straight from the plane to lunch, a meeting, or a hotel check-in without requiring a change. This is one of them. Black trousers, a white tee, and a trench coat feel timeless. Add loafers or sleek sneakers, depending on how much walking your itinerary involves.

7. Leggings + Long Cardigan + Ballet Flats

For the days when a sweatshirt feels like too much, try a long cardigan over a fitted tank and black leggings. Ballet flats give the outfit a softer feel, particularly with a little jewelry and a neat shoulder bag. Just make sure they’re comfortable enough for the walk to your gate. Blisters are not the travel accessory we’re looking for.

8. Linen Trousers + Sleeveless Top + Oversized Shirt

Heading somewhere warm? Linen trousers are a lovely departure from the usual travel-day leggings. Wear them with a sleeveless top and an oversized shirt that doubles as a light layer. The slightly rumpled look of linen is part of its charm, so there’s no need to spend your journey worrying about every crease.

9. Flared Leggings + Half-Zip Sweatshirt + Retro Sneakers

Flared leggings are for anyone who likes the comfort of leggings but wants something a little different. A half-zip sweatshirt and retro sneakers give the outfit a sporty, slightly vintage feel. I’d choose a sweatshirt that finishes around the hip rather than one that swallows the flare completely. The shape is the whole point.

10. Wide-Leg Jeans + Soft Sweater + UGGs

There’s something very appealing about an outfit that looks like your everyday wardrobe rather than a special uniform for traveling. Wide-leg jeans and a soft sweater do exactly that. Add UGGs and a roomy shoulder bag. It’s casual, but it doesn’t feel as though you’ve given up on getting dressed altogether.

11. Leggings + Oversized Button-Down + Baseball Cap

An oversized button-down is a welcome change from the sweatshirt that seems to accompany every airport outfit you see online. Wear it open over a fitted tank with black leggings, a baseball cap, and sneakers. It’s relaxed without looking sleepy, and you can always tie the shirt around your waist if the terminal turns out to be warmer than expected.

12. Knit Midi Dress + Denim Jacket + Sneakers

Who says airport outfits have to involve trousers? A stretchy knit midi dress is an easy one-piece option, especially if you don’t enjoy coordinating separates at an ungodly hour. A denim jacket keeps it casual, while sneakers make it practical. Just choose a dress that lets you sit comfortably without constantly tugging at the hem.

13. Biker Shorts + Oversized Sweatshirt + Retro Sneakers

Biker shorts are back in the conversation, and I think they look best when you stop trying to make them resemble full-length leggings. Pair them with an oversized sweatshirt and retro sneakers, letting the bare ankle remain part of the look. This one makes more sense for a warm-weather trip than a freezing cabin, so pack an extra layer.

14. Tailored Joggers + Fitted Tank + Zip-Up Hoodie

Joggers can look surprisingly good when you choose a pair with a clean cut and substantial fabric. A fitted tank keeps the top half simple, while a zip-up hoodie is much easier to remove in a cramped airplane seat than a pullover. It’s sporty, comfortable, and a little more considered than wearing your actual gym clothes.

15. Monochrome Beige Outfit + White Sneakers

An all-beige outfit always looks tempting until you remember that airport coffee exists. Still, a cream knit with beige trousers and white sneakers is a beautiful combination if you’re willing to risk it. Mix a few shades rather than trying to match everything exactly. The result feels softer and more interesting than a perfectly coordinated set.

16. Cargo Pants + Fitted Tee

For a slightly edgier airport look, try olive cargo pants with a fitted tee. The combination has a streetwear feel without requiring an elaborate outfit. I’d keep the sneakers simple and leave the cargo pockets for things other than your passport. The last thing anyone needs is a frantic security-line pocket search.

17. Leggings + Leather Jacket + White Tee

A leather jacket is an easy way to make your favorite leggings outfit feel less like a trip to the gym. A plain white tee and white sneakers keep things casual, while the jacket brings a little attitude. It’s the outfit I’d reach for when I want to look good arriving somewhere without pretending I’m willing to sacrifice comfort for fashion.

18. Knit Trousers + Matching Cardigan + Loafers

Matching knitwear is not reserved for staying home with a coffee and a book. A fine-knit cardigan and matching trousers can look lovely for travel, especially in charcoal, navy, or a warm neutral. Wear a simple tee underneath and add loafers if yours are already broken in.

19. Denim-on-Denim + Ballet Flats

Denim-on-denim can be surprisingly chic when the washes aren’t identical. I’d try relaxed blue jeans with a slightly lighter denim shirt worn open over a white tank. Ballet flats keep the combination from feeling too dressed up, and the shirt gives you an extra layer without the bulk of a jacket.

20. Midi Skirt + Lightweight Sweater + Sneakers

A flowing midi skirt with sneakers is a good alternative for anyone who doesn’t want to wear trousers on every trip. Add a lightweight sweater and a shoulder bag, and the outfit feels casual without losing its feminine side. I’d avoid anything too voluminous if you’re carrying several bags. The airport is already enough of an obstacle course.
