Moving into your first apartment is an exciting milestone, and one of the spaces that deserves careful attention is the bathroom. Creating a comfortable and well-equipped bathroom can significantly enhance your daily routine.

One of the most used spaces in your apartment will be your bathroom, which makes it a great opportunity to decorate with style and get your essentials taken care of all at once!

In this guide, we will explore the essential items every first apartment bathroom needs, ensuring that you start this new chapter with a functional and stylish space.

Our goal is to provide a straightforward list, keeping it simple with only the essentials. We trust you’ll discover everything necessary for a successful bathroom experience in your new home!

Bathroom Essentials

1. Mirror

Mirrors stand out as essential contributors to the functionality and style of your first apartment bathroom.

Choose mirrors that complement your decor, creating a focal point that enhances both functionality and visual appeal in your new home.

If there’s no built-in mirror, consider a mirrored cabinet or a wall-mounted standard mirror with a unique edge.

For close-up tasks like makeup, install a wall-mounted magnifying mirror with a swing arm.

2.  Shower curtain, liner, and rings

Unlike the other bathroom essentials, this one is a bit harder to overlook!

When selecting mildew-resistant shower curtains, you have various choices that align with your preferences, even before thinking about funky patterns.  You can go for a curtain with a built-in liner, a separate plastic one, or just skip the liner—totally up to you!

Just as you would for any other room in your apartment, align your bathroom essentials with the overall aesthetic you envision.

3. Bathroom Mat

Bath mats are lifesavers for keeping your floors dry and resisting the potential for mold to happen on your floors. While they serve a practical function, that doesn’t mean they can’t be nice to look at too!

You can also get one in front of your sink to catch any water from washing hands, faces, or brushing your teeth.

4. Towels And Washcloths

It might seem like a no-brainer, but it is definitely easy to forget on your bathroom essentials list!

Make sure you’ve got 4-6 of them around, so you can swap and wash regularly. Stick to a classic neutral tone for a versatile look, or have some fun with colors and patterns that match your other bathroom essentials.

Here’s a personal tip: Consider using a separate towel for your face, especially if you have acne-prone skin like me.

Since I moved out, I’ve grabbed extra washcloths just for my face, and trust me, it’s a game-changer!

5. Toothbrush holder & Soap Set

Instead of having your toothbrush and toothpaste sit on the counter, you can make your counter look more organized with a toothbrush holder.

They make your bathroom look luxurious and practical, and they’re surprisingly budget-friendly.

6. Toilet paper

Its not a bathroom essential you want to forget!

Running out in the middle of the night or during unexpected weather situations can be a real hassle. It’s a smart move to keep at least a spare roll or two in the bathroom, with the rest stored elsewhere.

7. Toilet Brush

Not the most fun bathroom essentials, but you need a toilet brush.

I personally am into this drip-free toilet bowl brush with holder. This set can help with limiting space in your bathroom to make it look more open.

8. Trash Bin

Having a small bin is super useful for disposing of used makeup wipes, tissues, and any other bathroom trash that piles up.

Personally, I prefer a garbage can with a closed lid for the bathroom.

9. Shower Organizer

If you have a lot of shower products, like me,a shower organizer is a must-have. It is easily installable inside the shower without the need for drilling any holes, making it an excellent renter-friendly product!

Whether it’s a shower caddy for the corners or traditional shower shelves, there are versatile options to suit your needs.

10. Drain Stopper

To prevent hair from clogging the drain, it’s simpler to clean a hair catcher than deal with the hassle of clearing it from the drain.

11. Floating shelves

Floating shelves are a must-have among bathroom essentials, especially in the absence of built-in storage (aside from the under-sink cabinet). They’re like storage saviors!

I like sticking them above the toilet. They’re perfect for stashing toilet paper, cleaning stuff, washcloths, or whatever bathroom stuff you need.

12. Laundry Basket

When space is limited, think about putting your laundry basket in the bathroom. Personally, I keep mine near the bathtub for a quick toss of clothes before stepping into the shower, making them ready for washing.

I have this adorable jute laundry basket that I adore, it perfectly complements my neutral bathroom decor.

13. Hair dryer organizer

Dealing with hair dryers and curling irons can be a bit of a headache when it comes to organizing and space. You have the option to either mount the organizer on the inside of the cabinet or, if you prefer a drill-free solution, hang this hair dryer organizer over the cabinet door.

14. Bathroom Containers

In my small bathroom, these holders really work wonders to make the most of the space, keeping everything neat.  This is where you can place your Q-tips, cotton balls, and makeup pads.

Plus, it saves me from the annoyance of seeing my cotton balls scattered everywhere.

15. Drawer Organizer

If you have drawers in your bathroom, then these are a game-changer.

You can use these drawers to organize your skincare products and keep everything in place.

16. Makeup Organizer

If you do your makeup in the bathroom and have a large counter space, I strongly recommend investing in a makeup organizer. Not only does it tidy up your makeup collection, but it also ensures your counters stay neat and clutter-free.

I got this one last month, and I LOVE IT!!

17. No drill hooks

When I moved into my apartment, I realized we only had one hook. Instead of drilling holes into the wall, we opted for no drill hooks. They’re incredibly easy to attach and remove.

This renter-friendly solution won’t damage the paint or walls in your apartment. It’s a compact yet practical product that’s perfect for small showers.

18. Hand Soap

This seems obvious, but this is one of the most easily forgotten bathroom essentials!

19. Cleaning Supplies

Keep your bathroom sparkling clean with a set of cleaning supplies. This should include an all-purpose cleaner, disinfectant wipes, and toilet bowl cleaner.

Regular cleaning not only maintains hygiene but also prolongs the lifespan of your bathroom fixtures.

This is everything for The Bathroom Essentials!
