18 Thanksgiving Outfits for Women That Make Getting Dressed the Easy Part

Need something to wear for Thanksgiving? These Thanksgiving outfits for women cover everything from casual family dinners to dressier celebrations, with plenty of fall-worthy ideas in between.

Thanksgiving is probably one of the few occasions where I can understand the temptation to plan an outfit around the food.

You may be getting dressed for a family dinner, hosting everyone at home, going out to a restaurant, or spending the afternoon moving between the kitchen and the sofa. So while I want an outfit to look good, I also want to be able to sit down in it.

This is where fall clothes really come into their own. Cashmere sweaters, suede, tailored trousers, riding boots, pretty skirts, denim, and all those shades of brown and burgundy suddenly make perfect sense.

Here are the Thanksgiving outfits I’d actually consider wearing.

Thanksgiving Outfits for Women

1. Striped Sweater and Jeans

I always come back to a striped sweater in the fall. A cream-and-brown or cream-and-navy version with straight-leg jeans and suede boots feels very Thanksgiving to me, without having anything remotely turkey-themed about it.

It’s also an outfit you can put together in about five minutes.

2. Plaid Blazer with Jeans

A plaid blazer is one of those pieces that earns its place in a fall wardrobe every year.

Wear it with jeans, a fine-knit sweater, and loafers or heels. If you’re hosting, I like this much more than anything overly dressy, you still look pulled together while being able to actually do things.

3. Mini Skirt with Riding Boots

This is one of my favorite fall combinations, full stop.

A wool or tweed mini skirt, tights, and tall riding boots has that slightly preppy November feeling I love. Add a sweater and a coat and you’re ready for a Thanksgiving dinner that involves leaving the house.

4. Suede Trousers

Suede trousers have been on my fall wish list for a while, and Thanksgiving is exactly the sort of occasion I’d wear them for.

Camel suede with a cream knit is particularly good. Keep the rest simple, the fabric already gives the outfit plenty to look at.

5. Tweed Jacket and Denim

The lady jacket trend makes a lot of sense for Thanksgiving.

A tweed jacket with jeans is dressier than your usual denim-and-sweater combination, but you don’t have to commit to a dress or heels. I’d wear it with a simple knit underneath and either ballet flats or ankle boots.

6. Brown Trousers and Cashmere

If jeans aren’t your thing, brown trousers are an easy substitute.

I especially like chocolate brown with cream or oatmeal cashmere. The colors do most of the work, so you can keep the accessories very simple.

7. Cropped Jeans and a Pretty Sweater

There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping Thanksgiving casual.

A pair of ankle-length jeans, a good sweater, and a feminine shoe, perhaps a slingback or ballet flat, is one of those combinations that always looks considered even though there’s very little going on.

8. Plaid Skirt with a Sweater

A plaid midi skirt can make an otherwise ordinary sweater feel much more appropriate for the occasion.

I like a fuller skirt with a fitted sweater tucked in, particularly with tall boots. It’s a little dressier than jeans but still feels like fall.

9. Camel from Head to Toe

Monochrome dressing is particularly good with camel.

Try a camel sweater with trousers in a slightly different shade, then add brown suede shoes. I wouldn’t worry about matching everything exactly, the small differences between the shades are what make it interesting.

10. Oversized Cashmere Sweater

This might be the most honest Thanksgiving outfit on the list.

An oversized cashmere sweater with relaxed trousers or jeans gives you somewhere to go when you’ve reached the point where the waistband of your pants has become your enemy.

And honestly, I see no reason to fight it.

11. Wrap Cardigan with Black Pants

A wrap cardigan is one of those pieces that deserves more attention around Thanksgiving.

The waist tie gives you some shape, while the softer knit makes it much more comfortable than a structured jacket. Wear it with black trousers or jeans and a simple flat for a dinner at home.

And yes, I appreciate any outfit that has a little flexibility after the turkey comes out.

12. Velvet Blazer with Jeans

Velvet feels especially good in November. A chocolate, burgundy, or black velvet blazer over a simple camisole or fitted top makes jeans feel dinner-worthy, and I like the slight hint of eveningwear without actually wearing a party outfit.

13. Little Black Dress

For a dressier Thanksgiving, I’d rather wear a simple black dress than buy something covered in seasonal details.

A midi or knee-length style with slingbacks, pumps, or tall boots gives you plenty of room to change the mood with accessories. Gold earrings and a good coat would be enough for me.

14. Cardigan Worn as a Top

Buttoning a cardigan all the way up and wearing it as a top is one of my favorite little styling tricks.

It works especially well with high-waisted jeans or trousers because the proportions are clean. Add a belt and a pair of loafers and let the cardigan’s buttons or neckline provide the detail.

15. Sweater Dress with Boots

A sweater dress makes sense for Thanksgiving in a very practical way.

You’re wearing one piece, you can layer over it if it’s cold, and there’s enough room to sit through a long dinner. I prefer a midi length with knee-high boots rather than pairing it with a delicate shoe.

16. Maxi Dress With a Belt

If your family really dresses up for Thanksgiving, go for it.

A long-sleeved maxi dress in burgundy, chocolate, olive, navy, or a dark floral print feels festive without looking like eveningwear. Ankle boots make it much more wearable than a traditional party shoe.

17. Red Sweater and Dark Denim

If burgundy feels too predictable, try true red.

A bright red sweater with dark-wash jeans has a little more energy and looks especially good with simple black or brown accessories. It’s also an easy way to bring color into an otherwise neutral fall wardrobe.

18. Knee-High Boots and a Skirt

If you already own a pair of tall boots, build the outfit around them.

A midi or mini skirt with tights gives the boots something to work with, while a tucked sweater keeps the silhouette simple. This is also a good excuse to wear a skirt that has been sitting in your closet waiting for an occasion.
